Otways Loft is curious mix of tree-house, vintage train, raw and recycled materials, set in a rambling adventure garden.

We scoured Victoria to find a property to match Liptrap Loft. We found another hand built 'labor of love', unique  and full of character. This property in Forrest was quite run-down, but we renovated the house and Otways Loft has been set up solely as holiday accommodation.

It is not 5 star luxury, but we can say with confidence that it is UNIQUE. The builder lived in a shed on-site, and craned in a train carriage to use as a workshop, whist building the house. It is an eclectic construction, built on a framework of local tree poles. In parts, it is three storeys high. The interior is a mixture of parts from the train carriage, locally felled timber, materials from a nearby church, and other salvaged bits and pieces. The original build is reputed to have taken over 5 years.

Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rainforest with verdant ferny understory. It is lush and abundant. The dawn birdsong is deafening. The surrounding Otways rainforest is a pristine playground for nature-based things to do.

Things To Do

After logging ceased, Forrest was reinvented as a centre for mountain biking. The world class Forrest mountain bike trails have become the region’s signature activity. The mountain bike trails in Forrest are rated as some of the best in Australia. With over 60 kilometres of sign-posted single track, there is way too much for just one day. Mountain bike trails literally surround the town, so visitors experience genuine ride-in, ride-out from the house.

There's fantastic dégustation and quality food (local produce) at Bespoke Harvest in town.  The Microbrewery and Cafe offers great food and you absolutely must try the locally brewed beer. Good coffee is available at the General Store (plus good basic lunches like pulled pork rolls, they also sell fantastic sour dough bread baked on site).  The Corner Store, only a couple of hundred meters away, has cycling lunch fuel, coffee, bike hire/repair and trail info.  For pub fare, the pub doesn’t disappoint and is open every night, always with a toasty fire in winter. All within walking distance.

Brae restaurant has been ranked in the top 100 restaurants in the world.  It is a twenty minute drive from Forrest, so well worth a visit.

Otway Fly is a facility that showcases the beauty of the Otways rain forest.  It is longest and highest rain forest sky walk in the world. They also have zip lining.  It's great for kids.

There are lots of waterfalls to visit, Hopetoun, Triplet and Beauchamp Falls are all near Beech Forrest, as well as the Redwood forest, another must see of the region.

Closer to the house are Stephenson Falls and Lake Elizabeth, where platypus are frequently sighted at dawn and dusk, and glow worms at night. Also close by are Little Aire Falls, Triplet Falls and the West Barwon Reservoir.

Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Take the Great Ocean Road home on Monday when there is no one around.

Otways Loft is one of the most enjoyable places we have ever stayed in. It has the perfect mix of quirky and quality. As a family, we enjoyed the board games, the log fire, well-equipped kitchen with quality appliances, awesome mountain biking, large yard for our dog. I especially loved the upstairs bedroom, with bath and the most luxurious linen on the bed. Our teenage son loved the loft bedroom where he could sleep away the morning. There is so much do in Forrest and surrounds, we will be back. Thank you Dufflebird. You do it so well, it's not surprising you have won awards.

Beautiful house and setting

Such a beautiful, unique property - quirky, cosy and comfortable. We had a very relaxing three days here, enjoying mountain biking, cooking in the spacious and very well-equipped kitchen, board-games, the log fire, baths, strolls to Forrest centre for lunch (great food), communing with the local lamas and an absolutely stunning hike around Lake Elizabeth.

Gentlemen's Mountain Biking Weekend

This is my second stay at the Loft after visiting with my family of 5 for the first time in November 2016. This time it was 3 men on a Forrest mountain biking weekend with the Loft as our base of operations supported by the fabulous brewery, general store and mountain bike shop. The accommodation and facilities are comprehensive and it was spotless again. The recently replaced dish washer and the luggage cart were very responsive improvements following feedback from our previous stay. It is such a comfortable and tranquil house to get away in and Forrest is a gem of a small country town that has made a successful contemporary transition.

Loved this quirky treehouse!

Family enjoyed a long weekend break in Forrest - Otways Loft was super cute and quirky and had everything we needed. Teenagers loved having their own larger rooms, and we loved that it was a mini digital detox for them! Our dog could come too, which was great. We didn't want to leave........ Thank you Fleur

Love Forrest Loft

Our favourite place to stay in Victoria. Amazing house, garden and town. Hiking, mountain biking, swimming, amazing food and fabulous brewery. If it's crappy weather, light the fire 🔥 play the piano, cook up a feast or just read and open a can of soup.

Great tree-change break from the city

We had a great time at the Otway Loft. The house was really interesting with lots of great spaces to enjoy. Was perfect for our family of 5 but would also be perfect for 2 or 3 couples or a boys weekend for moutain biking which is what my husband is planning! The house is located in a great spot - walk to everything but you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. We ate at the Forrest Brewery for dinner which was great, Bespoke Harvest for lunch (fabulous and a must do!) and the Wonky donkey (good standard pub fare but super hectic the night we went with campers due to the rain). There is also a great little general store for provisions, lunch options and sweet treats! Really impressive options for such a small town. The kitchen at the Loft has everything you need for self catering. We had a mixture of weather but all can be enjoyed at Otway Loft as there are great outdoor spaces when the sun is out and an open fire and lots of heating if its cold. There is no tv which didnt bother us but bring games and jigsaws etc for quiet times. The sound system was good and theres a piano if you want to play some tunes. Lots to do in the area. We spent a full day in the Beech Forrest area doing the Otway Fly walk, a picnic and and a walk through the Redwood Forest, Houpton Falls and a sensational guided tour riding electric bikes with Otway E Bikes - give Nathan a call - great value at $105 for our family of five for a couple of hours action! The kids loved putting the bikes in motorbike mode!! (Our kids aged 8 and 10 and handled bikes fine but there are trailer options for younger kids). My husband hired a moutain bike from The Corner Store which is a shop dedicated to the mountain biking community and has not stopingped talking about the great tracks in the Forrest area (about 16 with different degrees of difficulty). We will definitely be back to the Otway Loft.

Beautiful Experience

We hired out the Steam Train Carriage and the Otways Loft for a group of 10 friends over one weekend. I’ve got to say the place was perfect. The train was a huge hit with everyone and arguments ensued over who would get to stay in the old carriages. The inside of the train has been decorated with steam punk inspired gizmos and gadgets scattered around in all the little nooks. Whilst the loft was more of a large wooden cabin which is where the majority of our time was spent as a group, nestled in near the wood fire with a nice glass of wine. A lot of attention has been given to all the small details which make these two properties so unique. A must stay!
